When did Laughter Yoga start?

Laughter yoga is based on the science of “laughing for no reason”. In fact, an Indian physician Madan Kataria discovered laughter yoga on 13th March 1995.

Dr. Madan Kataria started practicing laughing in a local park with 4 people. This was the first laughter yoga team building in the world.

Method

Laughter yoga (Hasyayoga) is a modern exercise. Which involves prolonged and voluntary laughter. This type of yoga is based on the belief of voluntary laughter. In other words, it will provide similar physiological and psychological benefits as spontaneous laughter. It is usually done within the group. Each team member will have to focus on eye contact. It will, inevitably, include playfulness between participants. Intentional laughter often turns into real and contagious laughter.

Dr. Kataria did this by gathering a group of people in a public park to tell jokes. The first week everyone enjoyed the humor and laughed. Not long after that, the response changed drastically.

Simultaneously, Dr. Kataria observed that whether something was humorous or not, people laughed when they saw others laughing. The laughter was visually contagious.

Dr. Kataria created and perfected simulated laughing techniques and incorporated breathing exercises into the routine.

The concept took hold and spread worldwide. Today Laughter yoga is found in over 8000 clubs in 65 countries.
