One-to-one coaching

A path for one person, with the same logic as team alignment

A team coaching session around a table

Not all the work on alignment concerns a group. Sometimes the person who has to find their course again is a single one: whoever leads the team, whoever is changing role, whoever finds themselves deciding without being clear on what basis.

One-to-one coaching follows the same principle as the team path, understanding where you are, deciding where you want to get to, and building the bridge between the two, applied to a person instead of a group.

The seven phases

1. Where we are. The starting point gets examined on several levels: professional, financial, physical, emotional. Without this step everything else is guesswork.

2. Where you want to get to. The direction matters more than the destination: what’s needed is an understanding of the route, not only of the end point.

3. The resources. The beliefs and the competences it takes to cross that bridge. Either one without the other isn’t enough.

4. The motivations. The reasons people do things they wouldn’t normally do. It’s the fuel, and it has to be named explicitly.

5. The interference. Obstacles and difficulties get named and taken apart together with the coach, instead of being gone around.

6. The actions. You decide what to actually do, not what it would be desirable to do.

7. Timings and checks. Deadlines get set and the course gets monitored with periodic follow-ups, so you find out in time whether the direction was the right one.

Individual alignment: what it is

It consists of getting clear with yourself about some characteristics of your own mind and your own individuality that have an impact on your work, and aligning them with where the company stands.

It starts from the capacity for self-observation, meaning the capacity to develop and clarify your own ideas and ambitions, to share them, to translate them into actions and to get other people committed to making them happen.

It’s the same operation we carry out on a group in Alignment, done here on one person.

Why it works

Because it’s a generative competence: it stimulates thinking and problem solving instead of supplying answers. It’s aimed at someone who wants to reach a higher level of performance, of learning or of satisfaction, and it works from there rather than from a problem to repair.

How long a session lasts

From 45 minutes to an hour, depending on what the person needs.
