What it looks like
Thirty-nine seconds of Music: what a group sounds like when it had never played anything an hour earlier.
Music is a universal language, and it asks for collaboration, active listening and a shared focus without anyone having to explain why. Like an orchestra, every member of a team has a distinct role, and each of them carries a piece of the harmony. In an orchestra you hear it immediately when somebody goes their own way. You also hear it when everybody plays correctly without listening to each other: technically right, and wrong together. Anyone who has worked in a team recognises the situation.
The musical formats build a team creatively without asking for much energy and without going far. It’s the family we suggest when there’s little time, little space, or a group that arrives tired. We run it in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
Nobody needs to be able to play or sing. That holds for every format in this family, and it’s the first objection we get. Our professional facilitators work routinely with groups where nobody has ever picked up an instrument: the design starts from there, and everyone gets to contribute. The day after, what stays is the plainest lesson of the day, that individual effort and collective result are the same thing heard from two distances.
When it makes sense to choose it
It works well if
- you have a few hours and one room, because almost every musical format runs in a single space
- the group is large: choir and orchestra scale very well past 100 people
- the occasion is a convention and you need a closing moment that pulls people together
- you want something shareable left behind: a song or a video circulates inside a company for months
- the team is multicultural or multilingual, since music steps over the language barrier
It works less well if
- the group is very small (below twelve people some formats lose the effect of the whole)
- there’s strong resistance to personal exposure: sound it out first, and in that case choose Body Percussion or Orchestra, where nobody sings alone
The formats
Corporate Song
Did you ever think of writing an anthem for your company? With Corporate Song the team writes the words that carry the company’s values, sings them together and shoots a real music video. The tune sticks.
Corporate Orchestra
With salvaged and recovered instruments, some of them made from recycled materials, we assemble the company orchestra. Exactly as at the office, each instrument has its own part and nobody else can play it. Includes the Drum Circle variant, which seats up to a hundred people in a circle with no hierarchy and no spectators.
Body Percussion
You can make music with no instrument at all: the body is enough. Hands, feet and voice, and a rhythm to hold together. The most immediate format and the least embarrassing.
Gospel Choir
A choir built in a few hours, in a genre that came out of collective work singing in the first place.
Lip Dub
One of our most enjoyable formats. The team creates an original music video over a famous hit: make-up, costumes, choreography and rhythm, nothing left out. A good way to spend an afternoon or an evening with colleagues and see each other from an angle nobody expected.
Music Race
A race made of music. Singing, dancing and performing, teams against each other, learning the newest hit and taking it on stage.
When what surfaces deserves an afterwards
An activity surfaces a great deal about how a team communicates, decides and works together, and sometimes what surfaces deserves more time, more depth and a method.
