Team building in Dubai

Dubai is where we’re based, and it shows in the details: permits, seasonality and the hours you can actually work in are things you learn by being here. It’s the destination we build the longer incentives and the international conventions around.

What we propose isn’t in the part of Dubai that turns up in the photographs. It’s in the historic quarter of Al Fahidi and along the Creek, where the city was a trading port and where you can still see where all the rest came from.

Worth knowing

November to March. It’s the only workable window for outdoor activities: from May to September the temperatures make the middle of the day impossible.

January and February are the best months. Ramadan has to be taken into account: it shifts everybody’s hours and changes the rules about eating and drinking in public.

Things people don’t always know

Until the 1960s the economy was pearls. Dubai lived on pearl diving and on trade along the Creek. The sector collapsed in the 1930s when Japanese cultured pearls spread, and the city stayed very poor until oil was found, in 1966.

The wind towers are air conditioning without electricity. The barjeel of the Al Fahidi quarter are square chimneys open on all four sides: they catch any breeze there is and push it down into the house, while the hot air goes out. Persian merchants brought them at the end of the nineteenth century.

You can still cross the Creek for one dirham. The abras, wooden motor boats, have shuttled between the two banks with the same service for decades. They cost about a dirham and they’re the cheapest transport in the city.
