Music Race
The team picks and performs songs against the clock.
What it is
A musical competition between teams, run in rounds: music quizzes, team karaoke and creative performance tasks, with singing, dancing and a stage at the end. No musical experience is asked for, and each person contributes with what they’re good at, so the strategy and the collaboration decide it.
On request, real stage costumes, make-up, wigs and props turn up, and the teams walk on as characters.
When it makes sense to choose it
It works well when you want a high-energy finish to a day, because it leaves the group on its feet and loud rather than seated.
It works well with very large groups too, where the audience becomes part of the show.
It works less well if there’s strong embarrassment about being exposed. Here you go on a stage in front of colleagues, and there’s no version off to the side.
How it actually works
The first decision is the most important one and almost nobody treats it that way: which song to choose. It has to be chosen for who’s in the team, not for which one people like most. A team with no high voices that goes for a song full of them has already lost, and will find out in front of everybody.
Then you learn the words, divide up who sings what and build a routine. Simple choreography is fine, as long as it’s together: what shows from outside is whether the group is moving at the same tempo.
Finally the performance, one team after another. It’s the part where the people nobody expected come out, and where colleagues discover talents in each other that had never had a reason to surface. The day after, the team has a new picture of who’s in it.
Three questions
Do you need to be able to sing?
No, and the format counts on it. The scoring rewards the choice of song, the ensemble result and the presence on stage, and vocal range has very little to do with it.
Are costumes needed?
They aren’t compulsory. On request we supply stage costumes, make-up and outfits, and they change the final effect considerably.
How much space does it take?
A stage or a raised area, and somewhere for the audience. A convention room works, with no particular set-up.
When what surfaces deserves an afterwards
An activity surfaces a great deal about how a team communicates, decides and works together, and sometimes what surfaces deserves more time, more depth and a method.
